Fast food restaurants and cafes are becoming more and more popular. Do you see this as a positive or negative development? Give reasons for your answer.
Fast food restaurants are popular because their products are cheap, generally tasty and can be eaten quickly. There appears to be a need for this type of food, and it is likely that the growth in this area will continue. One can see the advantages as they provide food that is popular with all the family and is universal, so there is no danger of the consumer being confused if they drift into their favourite chain restaurant in a strange town or country. This can be considered as a positive development, albeit a bit boring.
However, one has to consider the types of foods that are on offer. They tend to be full of saturated fats, sugars and salt. If people eat these products on a regular basis, there is a real danger of them becoming obese and developing medical conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or high blood pressure. In addition, the high proportion of salts and sugar are, cynically, added by the manufacture because they are addictive and ensure a regular flow of customers into the fast food outlet. This cannot be a good thing and there is a need for some legislation to be introduced.
One can therefore appreciate both the positives and negatives of fast food, and if restaurant owners can be encouraged to make their products more healthy, then the expansion of this sector should not present any problems. It is obvious they are liked by the general public and, in that they reflect needs, cannot be regarded as wholly negative.
